There is a great value and importance of maintain loving relationships since love has a positive effect on mental health.

Love has been defined in various ways and I am curious as to how you would define it. Please feel free to comment and/or send me a private message on your thoughts. But for now, according to science, love is more than just a unique feeling.  There is evidence that when we are involved in loving relationships various neurotransmitters and hormones in our bodies play a role that affect us systemically.  

Let’s look at some of the mental illness that are among the highest in our nation, depression and anxiety disorders.

According to research, getting married and staying married reduces depression in both men and women. Furthermore, research in the areas of physical health has shown that high levels of social support may actually improve prognosis in conditions such as cancer by reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression which can often be associated with these illnesses.

As a marriage and family therapist, I focus on my patient’s mental illness in a context of relationships. I look at how their relationships have effected them and also look at their loving relationships. So, for specifically treatment of depression, often times includes focusing on interpersonal relationships as a way to improve depression. Again, according to research, it is highly important to have a loving relationships, especially romantic.

So on this beautiful day, keep in mind that stable relationships can help to improve a person’s ability to manage stress, decrease anxiety and depression. As social creatures, we strive for social connectedness, therefore, I encourage you to develop and nurture stable and loving relationships.

  3. I had no idea that love is so effective with mental health. It is sad to consider that mental illnesses often can lead to depression or anxiety. Marriage, seems like a great way to reduce depression. It is amazing how being cared for can really make a difference. Thank you for sharing!
